Representative of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) in Palestine Ambassador Ahmed Al-Ruwaidi met here on Thursday with Secretary General of the Executive Committee of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) Dr. Saeb Erekat.
During the meeting, Al-Ruwaidi briefed Erekat on the OIC's efforts in international institutions and forums to support Palestine, as well as its steps to support Jerusalem and the refugees, in light of the resolutions of the extraordinary Islamic summit held in the Turkish city of Istanbul on May 18.
The OIC representative said that the serious developments in Palestine, particularly in Jerusalem, are a priority of the Organization's interests and moves with the member states and in the international arena. He highlighted the efforts of the OIC Group in the UN Security Council and the General Assembly in supporting Palestine's orientation and sponsoring the draft resolution on the international protection of the Palestinian people, which resulted in adopting the resolution in the General Assembly last month.
Al-Ruwaidi pointed out that the OIC General Secretariat is following up on the implementation of the resolutions adopted by the Istanbul Summit, especially with regard to drafting possible diplomatic, legal and economic measures against the countries that may recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel or transfer their embassies thereto. He also noted the General Secretariat's moves with the international parties to confirm and establish the legal and historical status of Jerusalem, and confront any Israeli measures targeting the presence of the Palestinians and their rights in the city, as well as to continue its role of mobilizing support for the Palestinian institutions in Jerusalem.
Al-Ruwaidi also briefed Erekat on the efforts of the OIC General Secretariat and the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB) to urge member states to provide financial contributions in support of the budget of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA). He further briefed the PLO chief on the current consultations with the IsDB to implement the resolution of the recent OIC summit on the establishment of an International Islamic Waqf (endowment) Fund to support Palestine refugees, as a way to encourage member countries of the OIC, non-member states, civil society, the private sector and individuals to make contributions to Palestine refugees.
In turn, Erekat praised the role assumed by the OIC and its Secretary General Dr. Yousef bin Ahmed Al-Othaimeen in supporting the political positions of the Palestinian leadership, particularly in the United Nations and international organizations. He affirmed the priority of Jerusalem in the action of the Palestinian leadership headed by President Mahmoud Abbas.
The PLO chief also stressed the importance of enhancing the developmental potential to support Jerusalem and its institutions and citizens, pointing to the need to strengthen the role of the OIC and its various organs in this regard.
Erekat further talked about the racist "Jewish nation-state" law, approved by the Israeli Knesset, considering it a call for ethnic cleansing against the Palestinian people.
