Jeddah The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) welcomed the United Nations Security Council's adoption of Resolution 2401 on February 24, calling for a 30-day humanitarian truce in Syria.
OIC Secretary General Dr. Yousef bin Ahmed Al-Othaimeen expressed his hope that the adoption of the resolution would constitute a turning point toward a peaceful and lasting solution to the Syrian crisis, based on the Geneva-1 Communique and the relevant resolutions of international legitimacy.
Al-Othaimeen emphasized the importance of Syria's only option to resolve the conflict, stressing the importance of translating Resolution 2401 on the ground to stop the suffering of the Syrian people, especially in Eastern Ghouta, which has been subjected to daily brutal attacks that led to the killing and wounding of dozens of innocent civilians and the destruction of residential areas.
The secretary general expressed appreciation of the efforts exerted by the Kuwaiti and Swedish diplomats, who submitted the draft resolution and acted for its adoption by the Security Council.
