Analyst Commends US President Trump’s Strategy in Pressurizing India for Dialogue with Pakistan

Islamabad: Dr. Munawar Hussain has praised US President Donald Trump for his approach in pressurizing India to engage in talks with Pakistan. This strategy is part of Trump's broader foreign policy approach, often referred to as 'Trumpism,' where he positions himself as a global peacemaker. Trump has repeatedly claimed to have prevented conflicts between nations, including a potential war between India and Pakistan.

According to Radio Pakistan, Trump has been vocal about his role in mediating international tensions, citing examples like the Iran-Israel conflict and Palestinian issues. He has advocated for a three 'Ps' policy towards India: pressurizing, putting to right size, and projecting power. His commentary also extends to the Thai-Cambodian tensions, where he claimed credit for a ceasefire. Critics argue that Trump tends to escalate conflicts only to mediate later, thus claiming reconciliation credit.

The pressure Trump faces domestically cannot be disregarded, especially concerning the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Despite a strong Jewish lobby in the US, public opinion is increasingly demanding a ceasefire and recognition of the Palestinian state. Support for Israel among Democrats has notably declined, reflecting broader public sentiments. Trump has also pressed Iran on nuclear issues, conveying messages through Russian President Vladimir Putin, but Iran maintains its right to nuclear enrichment under the IAEA agreement.

Trump's strategy involves leveraging economic pressure, exemplified by tariff discussions with the EU and threats to impose significant tariffs on India. This economic leverage aims to draw India into discussions on tariff reductions, highlighting a pattern of using economic threats to initiate dialogue.

The Financial Times reported on major European brands supporting Israel, drawing criticism from UN Special Rapporteur Francesca P. Albanese. Her advocacy has led to her being nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize, despite sanctions from the US. The report indicates a complex web of corporate and media influence supporting Israel, complicating Trump's position given his tensions with Israeli leadership.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is reportedly resistant to Trump's pressure due to domestic political considerations. Modi's policy against Pakistan, characterized by destabilization and demonization, complicates potential dialogue. However, some suggest that discreet negotiations between India and Pakistan, facilitated by the US, might be underway.

The UN conference on the Palestinian issue reflects growing international pressure, with European countries increasingly recognizing the State of Palestine. Mass protests in European capitals and France's announcement to recognize Palestine at the upcoming UNGA session signify a shift in international dynamics, challenging longstanding support for Israel from the Global North.
