Riyadh: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is currently in Saudi Arabia to engage in critical discussions with the Saudi leadership regarding the ongoing Middle East crisis. This tour is seen as a key diplomatic move given the prevailing regional security issues, especially since Pakistan is in a security agreement with Saudi Arabia. According to Radio Pakistan, the United States and Iran are both eager to pursue a peace agreement to conclude their protracted conflict, as the US seeks a dignified strategic exit after failing to meet its war objectives despite significant mobilization and expenditures. Pakistan has positioned itself as a strategic and diplomatic channel for both nations to reconcile their differences. Trusted by both Iran and the US, Pakistan is witnessing the initial thawing of relations between the two countries. However, potential obstacles such as Israel, which has its own agenda, could hinder the peace process. US President Donald Trump desires a diplomatic victory regarding Iran's nuclear i ssue to appease domestic sentiment, while Iran insists on maintaining sovereignty and seeks security assurances against future Israeli and US strikes. Additionally, Iran demands the removal of international sanctions to facilitate economic interactions with the global community. Ambassador Naela Chohan, a former diplomat, emphasized the importance of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif's visits to Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Turkiye, which follow a recent gathering hosted by Pakistan that included Saudi Arabia, Turkiye, and Egypt. This tour is also a continuation of Pakistan's mediating role between the US and Iran. President Trump has even expressed a willingness to visit Pakistan for peace talks, raising expectations for a potential peace agreement facilitated through Pakistan's diplomatic efforts. However, sustainable peace in the region remains uncertain if Israel does not adhere to any agreements. Israel's actions in Gaza, Syria, and Lebanon, alongside Prime Minister Netanyahu's internal corruption issues, could disrupt the peace process by diverting public attention through conflict. Dr. Huma Baqai, an international relations expert, highlighted the critical timing of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif's trip amid the ongoing US-Iran conflict. Although substantial talks occurred in Islamabad, a resolution was not reached. The anticipation of a second round of talks in Islamabad, as suggested by President Donald Trump, underscores Pakistan's crucial role in these developments. The visit reflects Pakistan's dedication to fostering regional and international peace. However, predicting Israel's response remains challenging, as Israel previously undermined US-Iran talks by attacking Lebanon. It is suggested that only the US can exert enough influence over Israel to prevent it from derailing the peace process.
