In an unusual punishment in a betel quid, famously known as Gutka, smuggling case, an accused has been ordered to plant trees.
The Jacobabad’s Consumer Protection Court slapped a fine of Rs. 200,000 on the culprit along with the order to plant and take care of 50 neem trees for one year after being found guilty of possessing gutka.
Furthermore, the Forest Department’s officials were directed to supervise the planting and maintenance of the trees.
Additionally, the convict has also been ordered to submit monthly reports to the forest department to ensure compliance with the court’s ruling.
The culprit was arrested by the police earlier this year along with 75 kg of Gutka.
In a similar case last month, the Punjab Food Authority (PFA) seized a heavy quantity of Gutka and imposed fines on shopkeepers for violating the law. The PFA officials recovered 1,100 packets of the prohibited item, stored in the secret places of the shops.
The shopkeepers were issued a stern warning against the possession of Gutka. Moreover, PFA has also encouraged citizens to report the sale of any prohibited, dangerous, unhygienic, or injurious items on their helpline 1223.
