Islamabad: Minister for Power Sardar Awais Ahmad Khan Leghari announced that the government is not planning to abolish net metering but is contemplating transforming its existing mechanism into a more effective, transparent, and sustainable model. He made this statement during a consultative meeting in Islamabad focused on the transition from net metering to a net billing system.

According to Radio Pakistan, the Minister emphasized that the government does not aim to harm any consumers or businesses. All decisions are formulated in the national interest, ensuring the long-term sustainability of the energy system. He clarified that users of net metering are not being required to provide electricity at the lowest energy source rates. Ongoing discussions involve the procurement of electricity units and efforts to align pricing with energy purchase rates, allowing the system to automatically adjust to fluctuations in prices. These proposals are currently under careful consideration.

The meeting saw participation from experts in the solar industry, representatives from relevant government agencies, provincial governments, and other stakeholders, aiming to collaboratively address the future of net metering and billing systems.
