Olympic Star Seriously Hurt in Climbing Accident

Karakoram: Olympic gold medallist Laura Dahlmeier has been seriously injured following a climbing accident in the Karakoram mountains. The mishap unfolded on Monday when the 31-year-old athlete was caught in a rockfall, resulting in significant injuries.

According to BBC, efforts to rescue Dahlmeier were hampered by adverse weather conditions and the remote location of the accident. A rescue helicopter was unable to reach the site until Tuesday morning. As the day progressed, the search had to be temporarily suspended on Tuesday evening due to low visibility, with plans to resume operations on Wednesday morning, as reported by German broadcaster ZDF.

Dahlmeier, who is well-versed in mountaineering, has an illustrious career representing Germany at the Winter Olympics. She notably secured two gold medals and a bronze at the Pyeongchang Games in 2018. Her achievement as the first woman to win both the sprint and pursuit events at the same Olympics stands out, along with her collection of 15 medals, including seven golds from five World Championships, before she retired from competitive sports in May 2019 at the age of 25.
