Islamabad: Pakistan and the European Union have reached a consensus to explore further opportunities to enhance their relationship across all areas of mutual interest, as highlighted in the Joint Press Communiqu© following the 8th Round of the Pakistan-European Union Strategic Dialogue held in Islamabad.
According to Radio Pakistan, both parties emphasized the significance of continued cooperation under the Generalised Scheme of Preferences (GSP+). The dialogue underscored the commitment to promote and protect human rights and fundamental freedoms, in line with international obligations. Acknowledging the growing collaboration on migration and labor mobility, Pakistan and the EU agreed to work closely on implementing the Pakistan-EU Talent Partnership Roadmap for mutual benefit.
The dialogue also addressed issues related to migrant smuggling and trafficking. Both sides committed to counter these challenges within the Global Alliance context and discussed matters of returns and readmission. Furthermore, the dialogue reaffirmed the importance of adhering to international treaty obligations and international humanitarian law.
The High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the European Commission, Kaja Kallas, praised Pakistan's role in mediating between the US and Iran, particularly through the Islamabad Talks. Both sides stressed the need for diplomatic resolutions to ongoing issues, including ensuring safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz. The EU's support for Pakistan's mediation efforts and the frequent exchanges between leaders were noted with appreciation.
Security cooperation, including counterterrorism, was a key topic, aligning with the 2019 Strategic Engagement Plan. The dialogue reiterated the importance of multilateralism and a rules-based international order, centered around the United Nations, for global stability, peace, and prosperity.
Regional issues were also discussed, with Pakistan briefing the EU on Jammu and Kashmir and the EU updating Pakistan on the situation in Ukraine. Emphasis was placed on resolving conflicts through dialogue and diplomacy, respecting the UN Charter principles.
On Afghanistan, both sides expressed concern over terrorist entities and stressed that Afghan territory should not be used to threaten other countries. They called for verifiable actions against terrorist groups and highlighted the importance of combatting terrorism in all its forms, in line with international law and UN resolutions.
The dialogue also tackled human rights concerns, particularly regarding women and girls in Afghanistan, as well as the rights to education, public participation, and freedom of expression. Both parties called upon Afghan authorities to address these issues effectively.
The discussion extended to the occupied Palestinian Territory, where both sides welcomed efforts to end hostilities in Gaza. They emphasized adherence to ceasefire commitments and the safe delivery of humanitarian aid, advocating for a long-term peace based on a two-state solution.
The dialogue also addressed concerns over developments in the Occupied West Bank, calling for an end to violence and illegal settlement activities. Both sides reaffirmed support for Lebanon's sovereignty and stability, advocating for coordinated international efforts for peaceful resolutions.
Looking ahead, Pakistan and the EU agreed to hold the 9th Round of the Strategic Dialogue in Brussels, continuing their commitment to strengthen bilateral relations.
