Islamabad: Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar emphasized that any attempt to deprive Pakistan of its rights under the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT) would significantly impact regional peace and security. He conveyed these remarks during a virtual seminar titled "The Indus Waters Treaty: South Asian Security at the Crossroads," organized by Pakistan's Embassy in Washington. According to Radio Pakistan, Ishaq Dar reiterated Pakistan's commitment to a peaceful resolution, underscoring that true peace can only be achieved through sovereign equality, mutual respect, and adherence to international obligations. He stressed the importance of safeguarding Pakistan's water rights with utmost seriousness. Dar highlighted that Pakistan will protect its legitimate rights under the Treaty and international legal frameworks. The Deputy Prime Minister criticized India's unilateral decision in April 2025 to place the Indus Waters Treaty "in abeyance," stating that such a move lacks any basis within the Treaty itself. He clarified that the Treaty does not allow either party to unilaterally suspend or alter its terms, emphasizing that obligations under international law cannot be unilaterally discarded. Dar underscored that the stakes extend beyond India and Pakistan, noting that the Indus Basin is a vital resource for over 250 million Pakistanis. The country's agriculture, food security, energy production, livelihoods, and economic development are intricately linked to the Indus River system. He emphasized that water security is integral to Pakistan's economic, food, and national security. He further warned that unilateral actions interfering with such agreements could undermine the stability of South Asia and set a dangerous precedent for international treaty relations.
