Islamabad: President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif have strongly reaffirmed their commitment to promoting the rights, well-being, and inclusion of Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) across all sectors of society. In their separate messages marking the 'International Day of Persons with Disabilities', both leaders called upon institutions, businesses, and civil society to actively participate in dismantling barriers and creating environments that enable PWDs to contribute actively as leaders. They emphasized the need to treat PWDs with dignity and provide them with necessary resources to succeed. According to Radio Pakistan, President Asif Ali highlighted Pakistan's progress in empowering PWDs through various legal and institutional frameworks. He cited the ICT Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2020, as a landmark achievement, ensuring improved accessibility, vocational training, job opportunities, and an inclusive environment for PWDs. He urged all societal sectors to facil itate full participation of PWDs in employment, sports, education, and other socio-economic activities. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif reiterated the government's commitment to providing equal opportunities for PWDs in education, employment, healthcare, and public life. He stated that Pakistan stands with the international community in commemorating this day, emphasizing the collective resolve to uphold the rights, dignity, and inclusion of PWDs. He called for efforts to challenge and change behaviours and attitudes that foster stigma and discrimination, advocating for understanding and respect. Shehbaz Sharif also stressed the importance of initiatives such as improving access to assistive technologies, enhancing inclusive infrastructure, and implementing disability-friendly laws. He acknowledged the critical role of caregivers, advocates, and organizations in supporting PWDs, underscoring their invaluable contributions to society.
