Agriculture Remains Central to Pakistan’s Sustainable Growth

Islamabad: Minister for Finance and Revenue Senator Muhammad Aurangzeb emphasized the pivotal role of agriculture in driving Pakistan's economic transformation and sustainable growth. He made these remarks while presiding over the inaugural meeting of the Committee for Genetically Modified Corn in Islamabad.

According to Radio Pakistan, the Minister outlined the committee's mandate to objectively evaluate scientific, economic, and policy evidence. The committee is expected to consider the perspectives of all relevant stakeholders before formulating its recommendations. Senator Aurangzeb highlighted the necessity for effective regulation, environmental safeguards, and the responsible adoption of modern technologies to enhance productivity and ensure sustainable growth in the agricultural sector.

During the meeting, the committee received an overview of the National Agricultural Biotechnology Policy, along with insights into international regulatory practices and scientific assessments. It examined global experiences with the commercialization of genetically modified corn, focusing on biosafety standards, regulatory frameworks, and mechanisms for the coexistence of genetically modified (GM) and non-GM crops.

The discussions also delved into the potential impacts of GM corn on various aspects such as agricultural productivity, climate resilience, food security, farmer incomes, industrial competitiveness, export opportunities, and compliance with international market requirements.
