NDMA Alerts of Imminent Flood Risks in Gilgit-Baltistan and AJK

Islamabad: The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued flood alerts for several areas in Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) due to the predicted impact of monsoon rains, which are expected to occur from today until Thursday. The regions under warning include Gilgit, Skardu, Hunza, and Shigar in Gilgit-Baltistan, as well as Muzaffarabad, Neelum Valley, and Bagh in AJK.

According to Radio Pakistan, these areas may experience flooding due to the anticipated rainfall. There is also a risk of landslides in hilly regions as a result of heavy showers. In the Chitral Valley, specifically in Buni and Reshun, the combination of rainfall and melting glaciers is expected to increase the water flow in the River Chitral.

The NDMA has also highlighted the possibility of urban flooding in Muzaffarabad and Bagh, attributed to the forecasted heavy downpours. To mitigate these risks, the NDMA has instructed all relevant departments and agencies to take proactive measures. This includes ensuring the readiness of personnel, machinery, and rescue teams, and maintaining vigilance to manage any potential emergency situations. Provincial Disaster Management Authorities (PDMAs) and local administrations have been urged to undertake timely preventive actions to safeguard communities.
