PM Orders Upgradation of Met Office’s Early Warning System

Islamabad: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has directed that the early warning system of the Meteorological Department be made more effective and fully operational on an emergency basis to mitigate the damages caused by severe weather conditions. Chairing a high-level meeting in Islamabad regarding the flood situation in Azad Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan, he noted that tragic incidents of human and financial losses have occurred across the country, particularly in these two regions, due to the ongoing severe monsoon season.

According to Radio Pakistan, the Prime Minister affirmed that the Federal Government stands in full solidarity with the governments, administrations, and people of Azad Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan during this difficult time. He also announced plans to visit Gilgit-Baltistan soon to express support for the affected communities. A relief package will be provided by the Federal Government to help compensate for the losses as much as possible.

Shehbaz Sharif emphasized that all relevant federal institutions should collaborate closely with the administrations of Azad Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan to assess the extent of the damages. He stressed that preventing further human and financial losses should be the top priority in ongoing relief operations. He also instructed local and federal agencies to focus on the restoration, construction, and repair of communication infrastructure and roads.

Chairman National Disaster Management Authority Lieutenant General Inam Haider Malik briefed the meeting on the nationwide impact of the monsoon, the forecast weather conditions in Azad Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan, and the measures taken so far. He reported that 295 people have lost their lives, while over 700 have been injured. More than 1,600 homes have been completely destroyed, and 376 livestock have perished due to the rains.

The briefing also highlighted intense flooding in rivers and streams during the current monsoon season. Low-level flooding is expected at Tarbela, Chashma, Taunsa, and Kalabagh, while medium-level flooding is anticipated at Marala and Guddu on the Chenab River.

The Chairman further informed the meeting that the monsoon season is expected to intensify by the end of this month. He said NDMA is undertaking comprehensive preparations to ensure effective preventive measures are in place.
