Islamabad: Constitution Day is being celebrated in Pakistan today, marking the adoption of the country's constitution on this day in 1973. The day signifies the establishment of democratic governance in Pakistan.
According to Radio Pakistan, President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif have paid tributes to the architects of the 1973 Constitution on this occasion. In his message, President Zardari highlighted the constitution as the central legal and political framework of the state since its adoption on April 10, 1973. He emphasized that it was the first time a directly elected parliament provided the country with a consensual constitutional order, and this consensus has been one of its defining strengths.
The President also paid homage to the late Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, the principal architect of the 1973 constitution, for his leadership in bringing together diverse political forces to achieve a critical agreement. He acknowledged the role of democratic political parties that have defended the constitution during periods of strain.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, in his message, described the 1973 Constitution as the protector of the fundamental human rights of all Pakistani citizens. He stated that this constitutional document not only outlines these fundamental rights but also provides a legal framework for their implementation. Sharif referred to the 1973 Constitution as a symbol of the Federation of Pakistan and national unity, expressing confidence that Pakistan will continue to progress and develop while maintaining its pride among the global community.
