Islamabad: Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif has said achieving export-led development targets is the top priority of the government. He was chairing a review meeting in Islamabad today on the overall development of the national economy and the implementation of the National Tariff Policy.
According to Radio Pakistan, the Prime Minister emphasized that the active and transparent performance of the National Tariff Commission is crucial for the promotion of domestic industry, trade, and investment. He urged the commission to play a proactive role in facilitating investors and industrialists.
The Prime Minister directed that the National Tariff Commission should be modernized by employing best practices and incorporating advanced technologies, including information technology and artificial intelligence. During the meeting, a detailed briefing was provided on the implementation of the National Tariff Policy 2025-30.
It was highlighted that under the National Tariff Policy 2025-30, tariffs will be reduced in phases across various sectors to achieve the targets of export-led economic growth. The meeting was informed that duties imposed on reefer containers and semi-trailers will be abolished to develop and promote the logistics sector. Similarly, customs duties are being decreased on specialized vehicles and machinery to promote the construction sector.
Additionally, customs duties on raw materials, particularly those used in cancer drugs, will be eliminated to facilitate the pharmaceutical sector. The meeting was attended by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, Minister for Law and Justice Azam Nazeer Tarar, Minister for Climate Change Musadik Malik, Minister for Economic Affairs Ahad Khan Cheema, Minister for Finance and Revenue Muhammad Aurangzeb, Minister for Petroleum Ali Pervez Malik, Minister of State for Finance and Railways Bilal Azhar Kayani, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister Haroon Akhtar, and relevant senior government officials.
