Lahore: Mourning processions were held in major cities across Pakistan as part of the observance of Muharram-ul-Haram, with authorities implementing stringent security measures. In Lahore, the main Zuljinnah procession commenced from Nisar Haveli inside Mochi Gate of Old Lahore Walled City and proceeded peacefully along its traditional route, concluding at Karbala Gamay Shah near the Data Darbar Complex.
According to Radio Pakistan, Inspector General of the Punjab Police, Dr. Usman Anwar, reported that over 100,000 officers and jawans of Punjab Police were tasked with providing security for more than 5,400 mourning processions and 2,772 Majalis throughout the province. Punjab Secretary Home Dr. Ahmad Javed Qazi also made a visit to the Central Control Room of the Home Department in Lahore to oversee the operations.
Provincial Minister for Information and Culture, Azma Zahid Bukhari, visited Faisalabad to review the arrangements for Ashura observance. She commended the local administration and security forces for their efforts in maintaining a peaceful environment. Bukhari highlighted that Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz had directed exemplary arrangements for Youm-e-Ashur.
In Karachi, a main mourning procession originating from Nishtar Park traversed its customary path along M.A. Jinnah Road, Empress Market, and Regal Chowk, concluding at Imambargah Hussainian Iranian Kharadar. Around 7,000 police personnel were deployed to ensure security. Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah inspected the procession route and stressed the importance of maintaining law and order.
Peshawar saw the main Alam, Tazia, and Zuljinnah procession emerge from Imambargah Agha Syed Ali Shah, Qissa Khwani Bazaar, with 14 other processions joining along the way. Security was tight, with over 11,000 personnel deployed, aerial surveillance conducted, and mobile services suspended to prevent any incidents.
In Quetta, the main procession from Nichari Imambargah on Alamdar Road proceeded smoothly with robust security measures in place, including the deployment of Frontier Corps personnel. Similar processions were held in Kohat, Khyber, Bannu, Hangu, Lakki Marwat, Kurram, and Dera Ismail Khan districts.
In Gilgit-Baltistan, Youm-e-Ashura was observed with hundreds of processions across its three divisions. The main procession in Gilgit began at Central Imamia Mosque, and after following traditional routes, it culminated peacefully. Special security arrangements were made by the Gilgit-Baltistan Administration, involving personnel from GB Police, GB Scouts, and Rangers.
