Türkiye’s Eurofighter Typhoon Acquisition Signals Strategic Shift in Air Defence

Ankara: Türkiye has signed an agreement with the United Kingdom, advancing its plans to acquire the Eurofighter Typhoon fighter jets. The inclusion of these aircraft is a significant step toward modernising Türkiye’s air force.

According to TRTworld.com, experts suggest that Türkiye’s plan to buy the jets is aimed at strengthening its defence strategy amid a changing geopolitical landscape. The Eurofighter Typhoon, considered among the most advanced fighter jets globally, is a collaborative product of the UK, Germany, Spain, and Italy.

Ankara has long been in discussions with European partners regarding the Eurofighter purchase. The recent agreement with the UK, a memorandum of understanding, sets the stage for more detailed negotiations. The purchase will include not just the aircraft but also technology, spare parts, ammunition systems, pilot training, and advanced avionics systems, making the process complex.

Türkiye plans to acquire 40 Eurofighter jets, requiring comprehensive agreements for aircraft, training, and logistical support. This acquisition is viewed as a temporary measure until Türkiye's domestic fifth-generation fighter jet, KAAN, is ready, projected for post-2028. Despite uncertainties over acquiring F-16 Block 70s or modernisation kits from the US, the Eurofighter is seen as maintaining Türkiye’s air dominance.

The Eurofighter and F-16 have notable differences, with the Eurofighter offering dual engines and better agility for short take-offs and landings. However, it comes with higher costs, approximately $90 million per unit compared to the F-16's $18 million, and operating costs are much higher. Despite this, the Eurofighter’s integration into NATO operations and enhanced deterrent capabilities make it a strategic asset. Its multinational manufacturing roots could also enhance industrial ties with EU states, potentially benefiting defence exports.

Yusuf Akbaba, a defence industry expert, emphasizes the importance of maintaining operational capacity while indigenous systems are developed. The Eurofighter’s radar systems and long-range Meteor missiles enhance Türkiye’s interception capabilities beyond its airspace. Türkiye’s defence responsibilities require a robust air inventory, and the Eurofighter will serve roles in both air-to-air and air-to-ground operations, integrating with early warning systems for long-distance threat interception.

Akbaba draws parallels with Pakistan's use of Chinese J-10C jets and early warning systems to counter Indian aircraft, suggesting Türkiye could use the Eurofighter similarly. This procurement strengthens Türkiye’s aerial capabilities and strategic relations with European defence industries.

The Eurofighter deal has geopolitical significance, aiding Türkiye-EU relations, especially with the UK, Italy, and Spain, and supports the European defence sector. The acquisition underscores Türkiye's relevance and loyalty within NATO, signaling it as a credible and contributing partner.

Analysts agree that the Eurofighter’s arrival is more than a procurement; it’s a political, military, and industrial statement. Aligning with NATO standards and European diplomacy, the jets bridge Türkiye’s current air power and future ambitions. The Eurofighter marks a pivotal moment in Türkiye's defence trajectory, preparing for a new phase of regional and global military engagement, as noted by Beykent University’s Olcar.
